SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will have limited involvement in team activities as he continues recovering from injuries sustained in a recent car crash, the team said.
The 49ers announced that Shanahan was injured in a vehicle accident earlier this month and is undergoing a gradual recovery process. Team officials said his injuries are not considered life-threatening, but he will have restrictions on some coaching duties as he returns to full activity.
According to reports, Shanahan suffered several injuries, including a concussion, a broken nose, hand injuries, and multiple rib fractures. Medical guidance will determine the timeline for his full return to normal coaching responsibilities.
General Manager John Lynch said the organization’s priority is Shanahan’s health and that the team will follow medical recommendations throughout his recovery.
During the opening of training camp, additional responsibilities will be shared among members of the coaching staff, including assistant coaches and coordinators, while Shanahan manages his workload.
Shanahan has served as the 49ers’ head coach since 2017. Under his leadership, San Francisco has made multiple deep playoff runs, including two appearances in the Super Bowl.
