Informing, Connecting, and Inspiring the Afghan Community
About Us
PAHNA Media: Amplifying Afghan-American Voices Through Community Journalism
PAHNA Media is a community-based, multilingual public interest journalism initiative dedicated to serving the Afghan-American community in California, with a primary focus on Sacramento and surrounding regions.
California is home to one of the largest Afghan communities in the United States, with thousands of Afghan immigrants and families contributing to the social, economic, cultural, and civic life of the state. Despite this growing presence, Afghan-Americans remain significantly underrepresented in local media and often face barriers in accessing reliable information, understanding public services, and participating fully in civic life.
PAHNA Media was created to address this critical need by providing accessible, culturally responsive, and community-centered journalism in languages and formats that Afghan communities can trust and understand.
Our mission is to inform, connect, and empower Afghan-American communities through independent journalism, multilingual storytelling, and meaningful community engagement. We serve as a bridge between immigrant communities and the broader American society by delivering local news, civic information, public affairs programming, and stories that highlight the experiences, challenges, and achievements of Afghan-Americans.
Through our reporting, interviews, and community-focused programs, PAHNA Media brings important issues directly to the people who need them most — including information about education, healthcare, employment opportunities, immigration resources, public services, community development, and civic participation.
Unlike traditional media platforms that often lack cultural and linguistic connections with immigrant communities, PAHNA Media is built from within the community. Our approach ensures that Afghan voices, perspectives, and lived experiences are represented accurately and respectfully.
Our Mission
To provide independent, multilingual, and community-driven journalism that informs Afghan-American communities, strengthens civic participation, promotes social inclusion, and creates a platform where underrepresented voices can be heard.
Our Vision
To become a trusted and sustainable Afghan-American community media institution that connects immigrant communities with public institutions, strengthens democratic engagement, and contributes to a more informed and inclusive society.
Why Pahna Media Matters
Access to reliable information is essential for a healthy and engaged community. Many Afghan immigrants face challenges related to language barriers, cultural transitions, and limited access to local news sources. Without a trusted community media platform, many individuals remain disconnected from important information that directly affects their families and future.
PAHNA Media fills this gap by bringing journalism closer to the community — reporting in Dari and expanding multilingual services, translating complex civic information into accessible formats, and creating opportunities for Afghan-Americans to share their stories and participate in public conversations.
Our work is not only about reporting news; it is about building connections, strengthening community resilience, and ensuring that Afghan-Americans have a meaningful place in the media landscape of California.
