California has launched a new incentive program offering eligible residents an immediate $3,500 discount when they purchase or lease their first new zero-emission vehicle.
According to the Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom, the MyFirstEV program began offering the incentive at participating dealerships on August 7. Unlike traditional rebate programs that require consumers to pay the full purchase price and wait for reimbursement, the new program applies the $3,500 incentive directly at the point of sale.
The state has committed $135.5 million to the program. Participating automakers are matching that investment dollar-for-dollar, creating a combined $271 million in potential savings for California consumers.
The program is designed to make electric vehicles more affordable for Californians who have not previously owned or leased a zero-emission vehicle. The incentive is available to qualifying buyers and lessees purchasing eligible new zero-emission vehicles, subject to the program’s income, vehicle and other eligibility requirements.
The launch comes as California continues its efforts to expand the use of electric and other zero-emission transportation. Transportation is one of the state’s major sources of greenhouse-gas emissions, and state officials have increasingly used financial incentives to encourage consumers to switch from gasoline-powered vehicles.
The new program could also have an economic impact beyond individual consumers. By reducing the upfront cost of an electric vehicle, the incentive could increase demand at dealerships and encourage more households to consider electric transportation.
However, the program is not intended to provide a $3,500 discount to every California car buyer. Eligibility requirements apply, and consumers must purchase or lease a qualifying vehicle through a participating dealer.
The launch provides a new opportunity for eligible Californians who have been considering an electric vehicle but have been discouraged by its upfront cost.
