Former Chargers Linebacker Billy Ray Smith Jr. Dies at 64
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Billy Ray Smith Jr., a former San Diego Chargers linebacker and College Football Hall of Fame inductee, has died at the age of 64, his family confirmed.
Smith, who spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the Chargers, was remembered as one of the most respected defensive players in the franchise’s history. He was selected fifth overall by San Diego in the 1983 NFL Draft after a standout college career at the University of Arkansas, where he earned All-American honors.
During his NFL career, Smith played 126 games for the Chargers and became known for his leadership and defensive ability. He later continued his connection with sports as a broadcaster and media personality in Southern California.
Smith’s family said he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones after a long battle with dementia that they attributed to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition associated with repeated head impacts.
Following news of his death, former teammates, the Chargers organization, and football fans paid tribute to Smith, remembering both his achievements on the field and his impact in the community.
Smith is survived by his wife, Kimberly Hunt, and their daughter, Savannah.
