Gasoline prices in California remain significantly higher than the national average, with state officials examining differences in prices between branded and independent gas stations.
According to California’s Division of Petroleum Market Oversight, Chevron stations charged an average of $6.34 per gallon during the final week of May. That was the highest average among the major brands tracked by the state and 44 cents more than the average price at unbranded stations.
The state’s petroleum market watchdog identified the influence of major brands in the retail market as one factor contributing to the price differences.
The analysis comes as California continues to face challenges related to refinery capacity and its relatively isolated fuel market.
California has also faced increased reliance on imported gasoline as some in-state refineries have closed.
