The San Francisco Giants could soon see one of their newest additions back on the field.
Marcelo Mayer, the 23-year-old infielder acquired by San Francisco from the Boston Red Sox at the MLB trade deadline, is preparing to begin a minor-league rehabilitation assignment next week, according to NBC Sports Bay Area.
Mayer has not played since June 25 because of a stress reaction in his left forearm. After joining the Giants, he completed a full workout at Oracle Park on Friday and is expected to begin his rehabilitation assignment sometime next week. (NBC Sports Bay Area)
The Giants acquired Mayer from Boston on Monday in exchange for left-handed pitcher Erik Miller. The organization hopes that the former top prospect can become an important part of its infield for the remainder of the season.
According to NBC Sports Bay Area, the Giants do not expect Mayer to need an extended rehabilitation period in Triple-A. If his recovery continues as planned, he could potentially join the major-league club during its upcoming road trip to Boston. (NBC Sports Bay Area)
Giants manager Tony Vitello said Mayer has looked good during his workouts and has been putting in significant work since arriving in San Francisco.
Mayer has experience at several infield positions. Last season, his first in the major leagues, he primarily played third base. This year, he also spent time at shortstop and second base before suffering his injury.
Vitello said he is comfortable using Mayer at any of those three positions.
The Giants’ need for infield depth has increased because of injuries. Casey Schmitt recently underwent surgery to repair a meniscus injury in his left knee and is not expected to return this season. Matt Chapman is also dealing with an abdominal injury and is considering season-ending surgery, according to NBC Sports Bay Area. (NBC Sports Bay Area)
Mayer’s return could therefore provide San Francisco with an important boost during the second half of the season.
The young infielder is also familiar with Casey Schmitt from their time growing up in the San Diego area. Schmitt told NBC Sports Bay Area that he was excited about Mayer joining the Giants and believed the young player could help the team once healthy. (NBC Sports Bay Area)
For San Francisco, the immediate priority is getting Mayer through his rehabilitation without setbacks. If he returns as expected, the Giants will have another young and versatile option for the infield during the final months of the regular season.
